The Türkiye İş Bankası 48th Istanbul Marathon is on Sunday 1 November 2026 (official site). It starts on the Asian side, in front of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge metrobus stop, and in recent editions the marathon has gone off at 09:00 (2025 race-day programme). No other marathon starts in Asia and finishes in Europe. The runners cross the Bosphorus Bridge, then the Galata Bridge, run out along the Sea of Marmara and back, and finish at the Hippodrome in Sultanahmet. If someone you care about is running it, this guide shows how to see where they are right now, where you can actually get close to the course, and how to get your voice to them on the long seafront road home.

Independence notice: Cheerlify is an independent service. It is not affiliated with the Istanbul Marathon organisers (İBB Spor İstanbul) or its sponsors, and it is not the event's official application.

The race at a glance

Date Sunday 1 November 2026
Start in front of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge metrobus stop (Asian side), about 250 m before the toll booths; 09:00 in 2025, the 2026 programme isn't confirmed yet
Finish the Hippodrome (At Meydanı) in Sultanahmet, between the Blue Mosque and the Obelisk
Time limit 6 hours 20 minutes; in 2025 the course closed at 15:20, with cut-offs along the way (42K page)
Bib pick-up Dr. Mimar Kadir Topbaş Gösteri ve Sanat Merkezi in Yenikapı, Thu 29 and Fri 30 October 10:00–19:00, Sat 31 October 10:00–18:00, for 42K and 15.5K runners (Turkish 42K page; same in finishers.com); no pick-up on race day
Field 42K registration is closed; the organisers expect more than 45,000 runners across all distances (İGF Haber). In 2025, 5,976 registered for the 42K (Habertürk)

In 2025 the marathon started at 09:00, and the 15.5K followed on the same course in three waves from 09:19, finishing in Yenikapı. The pick-up dates above are now on the organisers' Turkish 42K page (the English version still shows older dates). The 2026 start time and cut-offs were still unpublished on 20 October, so treat those as to be confirmed and look at maraton.istanbul again in race week.

Mind the clocks: Türkiye stays on UTC+3 all year. Most of Europe changed back to winter time on 25 October, so on race day Istanbul is two hours ahead of Central Europe and three hours ahead of the UK and Ireland. A 09:00 start is 07:00 in Berlin or Budapest and 06:00 in London.

1. Official tracking: live results and the broadcast

A chip tied to the runner's shoe does the timing. On race day the official site carries a Live Results link; in 2025 it went to the results pages of the timing company, Splittime, where you searched by bib number, so get the number from your runner before Sunday. İBB Spor İstanbul also streamed the race live on its YouTube channel (Habertürk). We found no official tracking app for 2026 and no published list of timing points; check the official site in race week.

The chip times are the official record: nothing is more precise, and they become the split and finish times in the results. They arrive in steps, though. Between two mats you only see the last reading, and the system can't tell you when your runner will get to the corner where you're waiting. The difference is explained here: chip timing vs GPS tracking.

2. Live GPS on the map, between the readings

A dot that actually moves needs GPS tracking on the runner's own phone: Strava Beacon, Garmin LiveTrack, plain location sharing or Cheerlify (marathon tracking apps compared). Cheerlify snaps the dot to the course, so you see which kilometre they're on and get an arrival estimate for any point. That matters in Istanbul because the course passes the same stretch of seafront twice, about two hours apart, and the estimate tells you when to be back at the barrier.

Tip: keep the Live Results page open for the official splits and the GPS map for the in-between. One tells you their time at the last mat, the other tells you how long until they reach Kumkapı.

The course, stage by stage

Based on the organisers' course description and landmark list and the course in the Cheerlify race catalog (taken from the organisers' map). The kilometres are approximate:

km Where
0 in front of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge metrobus stop, Asian side (start)
1–2 over the 15 July Martyrs (Bosphorus) Bridge into Europe
3–5 the Beşiktaş turn-off, then down Barbaros Bulvarı to the water; Naval Museum (about km 5)
6–9 Dolmabahçe Palace (about km 6), Kabataş, Fındıklı, Tophane, Karaköy
9–10 across the Galata Bridge (about km 9), then Eminönü: the New Mosque and the Spice Bazaar
10–13 Sirkeci, round Sarayburnu below Topkapı Palace onto Kennedy Caddesi; Ahırkapı lighthouse (about km 12)
13–16 Kumkapı, Yenikapı (about km 15, where the 15.5K finishes)
17–22 Yedikule, the old city walls by the sea, then Zeytinburnu
23–26 Bakırköy and Ataköy; the turn at about km 26, by the Air Force Academy
26–36 back the same way along Kennedy Caddesi: Bakırköy, Zeytinburnu, Yedikule
36–40 Yenikapı (about km 37), Kumkapı, Cankurtaran, round Sarayburnu to Sirkeci
40–42 in through the lower gate of Gülhane Park, up the tram road to Sultanahmet, finish at the Hippodrome

The first 5 km aren't flat. The bridge climbs, and the road goes up and down until it reaches the water. From there it's mostly level along the shore until a short climb at the very end, out of Gülhane Park up to Sultanahmet (finishers.com). The hard part is the way back along Kennedy Caddesi, roughly km 28 to 36: a straight, open coast road beside the Sea of Marmara, with nothing between the runners and the wind off the water and the finish still a long way off.

Where to watch

The start is on a motorway approach and only runners are allowed on the bridge, so supporters are better off in the old city. Where we'd stand:

  • Kennedy Caddesi between Sirkeci and Yenikapı (about km 10–15 on the way out, km 36–40 on the way back). This is where you can see your runner twice. A 4:30 marathoner passes Kumkapı (about km 14) at roughly 10:35 and comes back past the same spot (about km 38) around 13:10. The arrival estimate tells you when to return to the barrier.
  • Galata Bridge and Eminönü (about km 9–10), for the classic photo with the Golden Horn behind them. They'll still look fresh here.
  • Beşiktaş and Dolmabahçe (about km 5–6), handy for the ferry piers at Beşiktaş and Kabataş if you're staying on that side of the Golden Horn.
  • Zeytinburnu or Yedikule (about km 17–20 out, km 31–35 back). It's quieter out here, near Marmaray stations such as Kazlıçeşme, and that's exactly why a familiar face helps.
  • Sultanahmet for the finish. The organisers haven't published a family meeting area, so pick a spot with your runner a few streets away from the finish chute.

On race morning runners ride Istanbul's municipal public transport free with their bib (42K page); supporters need their own Istanbulkart. Many roads stay closed into the afternoon, including the coast road from Ataköy to Sirkeci and Sultanahmet Square, and the last kilometre runs along the tram tracks to Sultanahmet (race-day programme). Check whether the T1 tram is running through the old city before you count on it; Marmaray and the metro are safer. Following from home works too, with the same map and the same cheers.

Weather

Early November mornings in Istanbul are usually mild, often in the low to mid teens Celsius (fatmarathoner; that's typical weather, not a forecast). Wind off the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara is common, and so is a passing shower. If you'll be on the seafront for hours, bring a windproof layer and check the forecast on Saturday.

Be in their ears on the seafront road home

After the turn at about km 26 the course comes back along Kennedy Caddesi for ten kilometres. Sea on one side, seafront parks on the other, a wide straight road, and on a windy day nowhere to hide. The old city is in view the whole way and doesn't seem to get any closer.

With Cheerlify you can send a voice or video cheer while your runner is running, and it plays right away, or record one in advance and pick the kilometre where it plays. It comes through their earbuds either way: the music dips, your voice comes in, then the music returns. Places for a timed one:

  • km 28, just after the turn: "You've turned for home. Every step now is towards Sultanahmet."
  • km 32, by the sea at Zeytinburnu: "Head down into the wind, short steps. Ten to go, and the old city is right in front of you."
  • km 41, in Gülhane Park before the last climb: the one thing you know will get them up that hill.

We couldn't find anything about headphones in the organisers' rules. One earbud or open-ear headphones are enough to hear a cheer clearly and still hear the crowd and the marshals.

For the runner: in the Cheerlify app, pick Istanbul Marathon from the race catalog. The official course is already loaded, so there's no GPX file to find. Share the link and the code with your supporters.

Supporters open the link and enter the code in a browser; no app, no account. A group can each send their own, live or set for different kilometres. For ideas, here are 30+ cheering lines for every stage of a race.

Race-week checklist for supporters

  1. Save your runner's bib number, and check the official site for the 2026 race-day programme and the Live Results link.
  2. Work out the time difference: on race day Istanbul is two hours ahead of Central Europe and three ahead of the UK.
  3. Get your runner's GPS tracking link and test it together during the week.
  4. Their phone should start fully charged, with battery saver off and location set to "Always". It's a long morning, from the early trip out to the Asian side to the finish in Sultanahmet.
  5. Have cheers ready: at least one for the way back along Kennedy Caddesi (km 28–36) and one for the finish. You can also send one live whenever they look like they need it.
  6. If you're in Istanbul: choose your spots (Kennedy Caddesi twice, then Sultanahmet), check which tram, metro and Marmaray lines are running, and agree on a meeting point away from the finish chute.

Frequently asked questions

How can I track a runner at the Istanbul Marathon?

On race day the official site has a Live Results link with chip times by bib number. Between the timing points, GPS tracking from the runner's phone, for example with Cheerlify, shows them moving on the map in real time, with an arrival estimate for any point on the course.

What time does the Istanbul Marathon 2026 start?

The race is on Sunday 1 November 2026. In 2025 the marathon started at 09:00 local time (UTC+3), which is 07:00 in Central Europe. The 2026 start time wasn't on the organisers' site yet when we last checked on 20 October, so look again in race week.

Where are the start and the finish?

The start is on the Asian side, in front of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge metrobus stop. The finish is in Europe, at the Hippodrome in Sultanahmet between the Blue Mosque and the Obelisk.

Can I see my runner more than once?

Yes. Kennedy Caddesi between Sirkeci and Yenikapı is on the course twice, at about km 10–15 and km 36–40, two to two and a half hours apart for most runners. From there it's a short walk uphill to the finish in Sultanahmet.

What is the time limit?

It was 6 hours 20 minutes in 2025, with the course closing at 15:20 and intermediate cut-offs. Runners behind a cut-off may carry on along the pavement but aren't classified.

Can I follow from another country?

Yes. The GPS map shows your runner in real time wherever you are, and your cheers reach their earbuds the same way, whether you send them live or set them for a kilometre in advance.
