Vienna City Marathon 2027: the Prater, the Ring and up to three chances to see your runner
Sunday 18 April 2027: the official VCM app, the course km by km, where to see your runner two or three times, and how to cheer at km 30 in the Prater.
In this article
The 44th Vienna City Marathon runs on Sunday 18 April 2027. It's one of the biggest race weekends in Central Europe: 49,379 registrations across Saturday and Sunday in 2026, a record, with up to 35,000 runners on the Sunday alone. The half marathon sold out in September, and marathon registration has already closed. If someone you care about has a bib, here's how to know exactly where they are on the day, whether you're in the Prater or following from home, and how to get your voice to them when it gets hard.
You have two sources, and they cover each other's gaps: the organiser's official chip tracking, and continuous GPS tracking from the runner's phone.
The race at a glance
| Date | Sunday 18 April 2027 |
| Start | from 9:00, in waves; in 2026 the six blocks went between 9:00 and 9:33 (start info) |
| Start line | Wagramer Straße by the UNO City, then straight over the Reichsbrücke across the Danube |
| Finish | on the Ringstraße between the Burgtheater and the Rathausplatz (not on the Heldenplatz any more) |
| Time limit | the marathon closes at 15:30 (marathon info) |
| Half marathon | also on Sunday, same start; the half finish closes at 13:00 |
| Course | flat (44 m between the lowest and highest point): the Prater, the Ring, Schönbrunn, Mariahilfer Straße, the Danube Canal, and a long out-and-back on the Prater Hauptallee |
Wave times and closures for 2027 are published nearer the race. Where we quote 2026 details below, we say so.
1. The official tracking: the VCM app
The organiser's free VCM app (iOS and Android) is built by the timing company mika:timing. It lets you follow up to five participants live, with split times, a finish-time forecast and push notifications, and it also has a live ticker, course maps and a crowd-density map.
What to know about it:
- The splits come from timing mats every 5 km and at halfway (course info). Between two mats the forecast is an estimate based on the last split, so if your runner slows down on the Hauptallee, the app won't know until the next mat. Every chip system works this way; we explain it in chip timing vs GPS.
- The VCM's "Cheers & Snaps" feature lets you send a text message that may appear on an LED screen as your runner crosses a mat about 200 m before the finish, "with a bit of luck". It's a nice touch, though your runner reads it on a screen rather than hearing it, and only at the very end.
- Install it in race week. Marathon and half runners get an app registration ID from mika:timing the week before the race.
2. Live GPS on the map
To see that your runner is turning at the Lusthaus right now, and not still heading out along the Hauptallee, you need data from their phone. Strava Beacon, Garmin LiveTrack, a location share or Cheerlify can all do it, and we compare them in marathon tracking apps compared.
Cheerlify matches the dot to the course, so on the Hauptallee it knows whether your runner is on the way out or the way back, and it gives an arrival estimate for any kilometre. That estimate tells you whether to walk from the Stadion to the Hauptallee now or whether you've got ten minutes.
The course, kilometre by kilometre
This is approximate, built from the official 2026 aid-station list and course data; the 2027 course map (PDF) shows the same landmarks.
| km | Where |
|---|---|
| 0–1 | Wagramer Straße, then over the Reichsbrücke |
| 2 | Praterstern |
| 4–5 | Kaiserallee, the Prater Hauptallee near the Stadion |
| 7 | Schüttelstraße along the Danube Canal |
| 9–11 | Stubenring, Kärntner Ring, the Opera and Karlsplatz |
| 12–15 | out along the Linke Wienzeile |
| 16 | Schönbrunn |
| 18–20 | back in along the Mariahilfer Straße; at about 20.3 the half marathon turns off to its finish |
| 22–24 | Schottentor, Schottenring, Roßauer Lände, the turn at the Friedensbrücke |
| 25–26 | along the Danube Canal, Obere and Untere Donaustraße |
| 27–34 | the Prater Hauptallee: out to the Lusthaus (about km 33) and back |
| 36–38 | Schüttelstraße again |
| 39–41 | Stubenring and the Kärntner Ring again |
| 42 | Opernring, Burgring, finish by the Burgtheater |
The Hauptallee is the stretch this race is known for: 4.3 km of chestnut trees from the Praterstern to the Lusthaus. It's the avenue where Eliud Kipchoge ran under two hours, and it accounts for about a quarter of the marathon distance.
3. Where to stand

The Vienna course loops back on itself a lot, so there are unusually many places where you can see your runner twice or even three times without moving much:
- Prater Hauptallee by the Meiereistraße (U2 Stadion). Runners pass around km 5, then again in the km 29–34 stretch as the course runs out to the Lusthaus and back, so depending on exactly where you stand you may catch them a third time. It's the best spot for multiple sightings, and from about km 30 there's the Motivation Mile with DJs and drummers.
- Praterstern, at km 2 and about km 27.
- Schüttelstraße by the Danube Canal, at about km 7 and km 36–38.
- Stubenring / Kärntner Ring, at about km 10–11 and km 40–41, close to the finish.
- Schönbrunn (km 16), one of the official supporter spots. The course goes out on the Linke Wienzeile and comes back on the Mariahilfer Straße.
The official 2026 supporter-spot map (PDF) listed Praterstern (km 2), Karlsplatz (km 11), Schönbrunn (km 16), Schottenring (km 22.5), the Prater Hauptallee (km 31) and the finish, each with its nearest U-Bahn station. More than 65 music and entertainment hotspots line the course.
Getting around on race day
Take the U-Bahn. For the start, ride the U1 to Kaisermühlen/VIC or Alte Donau; on race day the U1 runs every 2.5 minutes. For the Prater it's the U2 to Stadion, and for the finish the U2 to Rathaus or the U3 to Herrengasse. In 2026 the Reichsbrücke and the Ring were closed from early morning and 16 tram and 13 bus lines were diverted, so don't count on trams around the centre that day. Check the official travel page in race week, and use the arrival estimate to time when you move.
Weather
Mid-April in Vienna usually means highs around 17 °C and lows around 9 °C, but it can surprise you: in 2026 it felt close to early summer, and many runners dropped out or switched to the half. If you're supporting, dress in layers and bring water, because it's a long day.
4. Get in their ears at km 30
Most runners race with earbuds, and on the long Hauptallee straight plenty of them need more than music. With Cheerlify you record a voice or video message in advance and pick the kilometre (30 is the classic choice in Vienna: on the Hauptallee, past the Stadion, with the Lusthaus turn still ahead), and it plays in your runner's earbuds right there. Their music ducks, your voice comes through, and then the music comes back. You don't need an app or an account, just a link and a code in your browser.
It works just as well from home, so if you can't get to Vienna you can still be with them at km 30.
As for what to say, keep it short and personal, and time it well. We keep 30+ lines for every stage of a race.
Race-week checklist for supporters
- Your runner's bib number and start block are saved on your phone.
- You've installed the VCM app and added your runner to your favourites before Sunday.
- Your runner has shared their GPS tracking link (Cheerlify, Beacon, LiveTrack), and you tested it the evening before.
- Their phone is fully charged, with low-power mode off and location permission set to "Always".
- You've recorded cheers for the hard part, at least two between km 27 and 38.
- You've picked your spots (the Hauptallee gives you two or three sightings), checked your U-Bahn route, and agreed a meeting point near the Rathausplatz.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track a runner in the Vienna City Marathon?
With the free VCM app (iOS and Android): add up to five runners to follow their splits and a finish-time forecast. Timing mats are every 5 km and at halfway. For their live position between the mats, add a GPS tracker running on their phone.
What time does the Vienna City Marathon 2027 start?
From 9:00 on Sunday 18 April 2027, in waves. In 2026 the last block started at 9:33; your runner's block depends on their predicted time.
Where is the best place to watch the Vienna City Marathon?
The Prater Hauptallee by the Meiereistraße (U2 Stadion), where the course passes around km 5 and again between km 29 and 34, on the out-and-back to the Lusthaus. Runners also pass the Praterstern (km 2 and 27) and the Ring (km 10–11 and 40–41) twice.
Is the Vienna half marathon on Saturday in 2027?
No. The organisers have talked about moving it in the future, but for 2027 the half marathon is on Sunday 18 April, from the same start as the marathon.
Can I follow the Vienna City Marathon from another country?
Yes. The official app works anywhere, and GPS tracking from the runner's phone shows their position on the map in real time. Vienna is on Central European Time.
Follow your runner live — and be in their ears.
Cheerlify shows your runner's live position on the course map and plays your voice cheers in their earbuds mid-race. Supporters need no app and no sign-up.
